If a painting by Giovanni Tommasi Ferroni is titled Stilito Romano, it almost certainly refers to a “stylite” a Christian ascetic saint who lived on a column. The word comes from the Greek stylites (pillar dweller). Stilito is a monk or saint who lived on a pillar or column to seclude himself and be closer to God. Romano, of course, means he is from Rome.
The best-known historical figure of this type is Simeon Stylites, a 5th-century Syrian saint who lived on a pillar for decades as an extreme form of asceticism. Such figures became symbols of religious seclusion and spiritual discipline in the Middle Ages.
