4. Giorgio e il drago - Giovanni Tommasi Ferroni
The painting George and the dragon (Giorgio e il drago) refers to one of the most famous Christian legends, the story of Saint George and the dragon.
The story comes from medieval hagiography, 13th century. The gist of the story is that in a town lives a dragon who terrorizes the land. To keep him quiet, the inhabitants sacrifice first animals, later humans. Finally, a princess is chosen as a sacrifice. The knight Saint George appears, kills the dragon with his lance and saves the princess. The population then converts to Christianity.
