The title “Hunting for the Mountains of Lycië” (Caccia sui monti della Licia) does not refer to ééa specific myth, but to a mythological landscape full of classical associations.
This intriguing painting by Giovanni Tommasi Ferroni transports the viewer to a mythical and dreamlike landscape in which reality and imagination merge. In a rocky, almost archetypal mountain landscape, a surreal hunting scene unfolds: a knight on horseback, clad in richly decorated armor, raises his sword while a fantastic procession of hybrid animals moves around him.
Ferroni combines elements of Renaissance and classical painting with a distinctly imaginative imagery. The animals seem to belong to an unknown mythology: a snake-like creature with a bird's head, a green body that appears to be half horse, half reptile, and a hound dog engaged in battle. This wondrous composition evokes associations with medieval bestiaria, allegoryën and dream visions.
A characteristic of Ferroni’s work is the refined painting technique and the subtle light that gives the scene an almost theatrical intensity. The painting balances between story and enigma: is this a heroïsche hunt, an allegory of the human struggle with the unknown, or a vision from a lost myth?
With its rich symbolism and masterful execution, the work invites prolonged contemplation, with every glance revealing new details and possible meanings.
