‘Bittersweet’ (2018) is about the dangers women still face in our society. It is the wry aftertaste of a world full of beauty to discover, which, however, is never entirely without risk. The work was created at a time of disturbing news reports, in which women were even assaulted by police officers on their way home ’at night. Yet the message remains hopeful: the future is female.

The collage combines acrylic paint with magazine articles, newspaper clippings and personal memorabilia, such as hotel tickets and airline tickets. The texts in the background are excerpts from interviews with young, successful women in the creative industry. Women going their own way, free of societal expectations.

This work is a call for female empowerment: to embrace your femininity én be a “boss” at the same time. It is about daring to dream, to take risks’and to have the courage to createëren your own path. Because the power to define ourselves and determine our destiny lies in our own hands.
