Carpinus Tokaji Furmint – Lapis, 2019, Tokaj-Hegyalja, Hungary
1 box (6 bottles) €142.50 (recommended retail price incl. VAT)
Vivino: 3.8
Wine description:
A single-vineyard wine from the Lapis vineyard. After sorting the grapes and pressing the whole bunches, the must was fermented and aged in 300-liter Hungarian oak barrels. It then spent 8 months aging on fine lees. This Furmint shows unusual elegance, with a rich texture and great balance on the palate. Typically mineral and chalky, it offers a long, linear, and distinctive finish.
Winery:
The name Carpinus refers to the Bai family's largest vineyard and is the Latin name for the Hornbeam tree. The estate is a small family-run business with both István and his sister Edit actively involved. Their wine style is more modern than most wines in the region, yet it stays true to Tokaj’s authenticity and traditions. Not surprising, as both siblings gained extensive experience at wineries both in Hungary and abroad. István oversees the production of white wines, while Edit is responsible for the production of Aszú.
The vineyards are mostly south- and southwest-facing and planted with the native grape Furmint. The parcels carry beautiful names such as Gyertyános, Lapis, Deák, and Veresek. These are all classified as 1st Growth vineyards according to the historical Tokaj classification. The soil is complex, composed of clay and volcanic rock, including tuff, andesite, dacite, and eroded loess.
