Wine description:
Modern Barolo with a nice balance of elegance and structure. Pure finesse and round on the palate. Typical aromas of spices, but also vanilla due to 24 months of barrel aging. A textbook example of Barolo, in which power and delicacy come together.

On an unexpected Tuesday afternoon, the wines of Paolo Boffa were tasted. What wines, what soul and identity – each one delectable. Cascina Amalia is a company with a clear mission: to make high-quality wine with respect for terroir, nature and tradition. This seems to have succeeded, given the excellent reviews and scores of this charming winery.

The company is located in historic Monforte d’Alba in the Langhe, Piedmont. Originally from Ligurië, the Boffa family founded this fine winery in 2003. They felt strongly about the beautiful region around Barolo and bought a 20th-century winery in Monforte, including the surrounding vineyards. Dolcetto and Barbera were planted here, but ambition extended further. The family managed to acquire additional vineyards in Barolo, Cru Bussia, and in their own Monforte, Cru Le Coste.

Soon, the old farmhouse proved unsuitable for producing quality wines. The farmhouse was converted into a B&B, run by mom Maria Angela, while son Paolo ran the wine business. Meanwhile, under the watchful eye of father Gigi Boffa, a modern wine cellar was built. Every detail was thought of, with a focus on quality and craftsmanship.

Although this may sound like a grand and pompous wine company, nothing could be further from the truth. Paolo is a modest, quirky winemaker who prefers to walk around in slouch jerseys and focus entirely on his vineyards. He is close to his wines and his land, and it shows: thoughtful, artisanal wines with character.
